Byline: David Gardner PRESIDENT Obama reached out to some of the United States' fiercest critics in a whirlwind mission to ease tensions with leaders in South and Central America. Mr Obama was back in Washington last night after his charm offensive bolstered America's battered image in the region. Foreign leaders underlined his rock star status at the Americas summit by jostling to be photographed with him and even begging for autographs. But it was his attempts to mend broken diplomatic fences with die-hard U.S. opponents that drew most attention at the two-day conference in Trinidad and Tobago. Venezuela President Hugo Chavez - who once called George Bush the 'devil' - clasped hands with Mr Obama as if he'd been reunited with an old friend. And Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega, outspoken critic of U.S. policies, ended up sitting next to Mr Obama at the closing meeting of the summit yesterday. The Nicaraguan president had earlier delivered a blistering speech blaming the U.S. for many of the region's problems. lingerie wholesale But Mr Obama drew laughs and applause from other leaders by saying: 'I am grateful that President Ortega did not blame me for things that happened when I was three-months-old.' While he worked to ease decades of friction, Mr Obama cautioned America's neighbours not to blame all their problems on the U.S. book printing Mr Obama won goodwill even before arriving at the meeting by lifting long enforced restrictions on Americans travelling to Cuba. Speaking at the opening ceremony, he offered an olive branch to the communist outpost, saying: 'The United States seeks a new beginning with Cuba.' While praising America's initial effort to thaw relations with Havana, regional leaders pushed the U.S. to go further and lift its 47-year-old trade embargo against Cuba. And Mr Chavez later concluded: 'I think President Obama is an intelligent man, compared to the previous U.S. president.' However, there was no talk of reinstating Venezuelan-U.S. ambassadors who were so dramatically kicked out of each others' countries last year. Meanwhile, Mr Obama's decision not to prosecute CIA agents who used torture tactics is a violation of international law, a top UN expert has said. The UN special rapporteur on torture, Manfred Nowak, claimed the U.S. is bound under the UN Convention Against Torture to prosecute those who engage in it. Mr Nowak has now called for an independent review and compensation for victims. He told the Austrian daily Der Standard: 'The United States, like all other states that are part of the UN convention against torture, is committed to conducting criminal investigations of torture and to bringing all persons against whom there is sound evidence to court.' The memos approved techniques including simulated drowning, week-long sleep deprivation and forced nudity. Last Thursday the U.S. president said he would not prosecute CIA personnel who relied in good faith on Bush administration legal opinions issued after the 11 September attacks. But Mr Nowak added: 'The fact that you carried out an order doesn't relieve you of your responsibility.' ANXIETY must have quickened the pulses of diplomats when they saw the seating arrangements for the grand banquet. Barack Obama clearly has radical associates. He has no executive experience. Yet he now leads the race for the presidency. The media have ignored or glossed over aspects of his past that should disturb any potential voter. These include significant gaps in his rOsumO. replica hublot watches But the American people -- frustrated by a drag-on war, frightened by an economic crisis and disgusted with their politicians -- feel the need for change. And "change" is what Sen. Obama offers in his charming, confident manner, while John McCain, older and less clever politically, seems like more of the same. Future historians may ponder why this race wasn't between Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney, two better-qualified candidates. An Obama victory, and the return of a leftist Democratic Congress, would be irreversibly transforming. America's moderately conservative but politically inattentive makeup brushes people would find themselves on course to a welfare state: government-run health care, a radicalized judiciary, rampant labor unions and environmentalism as the civic religion. Byline: Bill Doyle Some golfers have never witnessed a hole-in-one. Jerry Godin, on the other hand, recently played with golfers who carded their first career aces on three consecutive days at Ellinwood Country Club in Athol. Talk about a good luck charm. Ellinwood pro Jim LeBlanc said he had never heard of such a Replica prada wholesale thing. "Three in three days is ridiculous," LeBlanc said. Ellinwood, a Donald Ross design, has had 11 holes-in-one in all this year. Godin, 78, of Athol said he mentioned the rarity to three or four golf pros. "They all said I should write a letter to Golf Digest because that's unheard of," he said. Ten years ago, Golf Digest reported that an insurance company listed the odds of an amateur golfer making a hole-in-one as 1 in 12,750. Suffice it to say the odds of someone playing with golfers carding aces three days in a row are even higher than a Fox News host praising President Barack Obama. Cliff Schrock, editor of Golf Digest resource center, said the magazine doesn't keep records on witnessing aces, but he estimated the odds of someone playing with golfers carding aces three days in a row at a million-to-one. "I expect you can say this guy has forged new territory in the world of holes-in-one," Schrock said. "It's pretty intriguing." On Nov. 3, Godin played in the same foursome with Marvin Black, 62, of Athol. Black used a 5 hybrid to ace the 160-yard, par-3 eighth hole. His tee shot landed in front of the green, bounced twice and rolled to the edge of the cup. After hanging there for a couple of seconds, the ball dropped in. On Nov. 4, Godin played in the same threesome as Peter Vitello, 57, of Athol. Vitello aced the 145-yard, par-3 12th hole with a 9-iron. His tee shot landed short of the hole and trickled right to left into the cup. "Jerry's very enthusiastic," Vitello said. "He's like a little kid. He loves golf. He was all beside himself and his enthusiasm is contagious. We were all pretty giddy about it." While Vitello was buying drinks for everyone afterward in the clubhouse, Godin announced that anyone who wished to card a hole-in-one the next day had better play with him. Sure enough, that's exactly what happened. Nov. 5 was a cold, misty day. Only six golfers showed up to play from the regular 9:30 a.m. group and they had the course to themselves so they decided to play together. Their final chance to continue the hole-in-one streak came on the 145-yard 14th hole, the last of Ellinwood's six par-3s. Kevin Kaczmarczyk, 31, of Athol, completed the unlikely trifecta by using a 9-iron to record the third ace witnessed by Godin in three days. "He gave me more than a hug," Godin said. "He kept shaking my hand." "He's a good luck charm," Kaczmarczyk said. "If it was going to happen, it was going to happen with him being there, that's for sure." Black also witnessed Kaczmarczyk's ace. "We were all dumbfounded," Black said. "We all knew what happened the previous two days. Kevin's was even more amazing because it went in on the Prada Replica Handbags fly." Godin wasn't the least bit envious of his golfing buddies. He has nine holes-in-one of his own, five at Ellinwood and four in Florida. I am writing in the hope that I may use your paper as a way of saying thank you to the golfer who, on Painswick Beacon last Wednesday morning, hit the ball that smashed my chin open. Clip on charms I would like to say thank you to the charming female companion who was with him who said that they hadn't time to hang around while I bled everywhere. I would also like to point out to other Beacon users that even if you stand right away from the fairway and not in line with the tee or the green, you can still fall foul of the golfers there. We are now in the midst of the "three weeks" preceding Tisha Be'av, when we mourn the destruction of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. The sages of the Talmud state that the Temple was destroyed due to sinat hinam - baseless, or gratuitous, hatred within the Jewish people. The expression is a bit anomalous, especially for a social scientist trained to assume that people have reasons for everything. I would like to present one explanation for both the term and the phenomenon, drawing on the resources of ethics and social science. book printing One obvious benefit of hate is to induce us to protect ourselves from harmful individuals, people who it would be dangerous to be near. This could be because they are actually trying to harm us (such as a mugger or a terrorist), or because they are liable to influence our behavior in a way we identify as harmful (such as a dope peddler). There is nothing baseless or gratuitous about hatred like this. But there are still isolated individuals who manage to rise above even this very practical kind of hatred - people such as Bruria, who taught we should hate only the sin, not the sinner. However, another benefit of hate is to improve the cohesiveness of some social group. It is a short step from noticing that adversity increases solidarity to realizing that inciting adversity may be a useful tool for bolstering solidarity within some group. Such "instrumental" hatred is not gratuitous in the sense of being without benefit or reason, but it is gratuitous in the sense that the object of hatred isn't being hated because of any particular iniquity. Rather, the Replica prada wholesale chosen enemy just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time - a time and a place where hating somebody happens to be useful. (Rashi's definition of baseless hatred: "He didn't find any sin in him for which it would be permissible to hate him, and [even so] he hates him.") Of course, hating people has costs as well: there are immense benefits to cooperation and friendship, which tend to be destroyed by outbursts of hatred. For this reason, we would expect that instrumental hatred would be particularly cultivated when its object is powerless to retaliate. One instance would be a powerless alien group, such as the Jews in exile. Jews often wonder what it is about them that arouses the scourge of anti-Semitism almost everywhere they wander. But it need not be anything in particular that Jews do; sometimes it is just useful to hate someone, and the Jews are a convenient someone. It's nothing personal. (Remember the kindly Constable in Fiddler on the Roof? "Just some mischief, so if an inspector comes through, he can see we did our duty. I don't know why there has to be this trouble between people. But I thought I should tell you.") Almost the opposite can take place in a free society. Fortunately, in a free society, innocent identity groups cannot be oppressed merely because they are different. But it can also be difficult to prevent a group from cementing its own solidarity by relating to its host society as a whole, or to some competing subgroup, as "the great Satan" or the like. There may be no particular trait arousing enmity and suspicion; it's just a matter of convenience and nothing personal. In other words, it is sinat hinam. replica hublot watches I belie Other articles: http://www.blogtoowoomba.com/entry.php?w=little123pig&e_id=7106http://www.ybzj.com.cn/bbs/Blog.asp?BlogUserName=mywatche&menu=ShowBlog&BlogID=666

YOU might think that a whole concert of solo harp music could become a little monotonous; but when the player has such command of the instrument and is able to produce sounds of such delicacy and tonal variety as those we heard from Lucy Wakeford, such thoughts don't arise. Nike shoes Her varied programme began with a persuasive account of Louis Spohr's Fantasie Op.35. Spohr was a near contemporary of Beethoven, whose music is neglected, and this charming, lyrical and elegant piece in three contrasting sections, deserves to be better known. The music of the Frenchman Albert Roussel, who died in 1937, is also rather neglected. cheap replica handbags His evanescent Impromptu is an endearing work in which a fertile melodic and harmonic imagination is combined with a strong sense of structure and an appealing directness. It was exquisitely played and made an interesting contrast to the atmospheric, if rather more diffuse style of The Mermaid's Lagoon by the young Welsh composer, Lynne Plowman. Here, our soloist was also required to utilise her vocal talent - as the mermaid. Another contrast came with a magical account of Benjamin Britten's Suite for Harp. This characteristically imaginative piece, in five, concise, inventive movements, exploits the whole of the harp's tonal range and ends with a typically ingenious set of variations. Cheap PRADA After skilful arrangements of the Orientale and the ever-popular Andaluza from 12 Spanish Dances by Enrique Granados, came the finale, a dazzling realisation of Faure's Impromptu. Byline: CHARLIE TROTT I'VE always wondered what it would be like to have a Christmas ski holiday. Imagine the festive glow from sipping hot wine by a roaring log fire while outside a giant white playground awaits with snow guaranteed on the big day. At first the family was unsure. Would they miss Christmas at home? Would Santa find us in the mountains? Would mum be bored without hours of cooking and tidying up to do? More importantly, would there be enough snow? Christmas week comes early in the ski season, the opening week for some resorts. I needn't have worried, the 2008-9 season had bumper dumps of snow in early December. In the Italian Alps, where the small resort of Claviere offered the traditional charm and variety of skiing we were looking for, they were up to their necks in the white stuff. Claviere is actually right on Cheap Nike Blazer SB the 1 with France and part of the famous Milky Way ski area which also includes the resorts of Sestriere, Sauze d'Oulx, Sansicario, Cesana and the French town of Montgenevre. Overall there are 400km of piste and some 78 ski lifts (50km and 13 lifts in Claviere itself) which peak at a height of 2,800m on Sestriere's Mont Motta. We were travelling with Crystal Ski staying at the Hotel Grande Claviere, conveniently situated about 200 yards from the main lifts and beginners' slope. It's also just across the road from the two-man chair head ing up to Mont Quitaine and the French Montgenevre area though the standard lift pass for Claviere only covers you for a single day out over there. Some of the Hotel Grande's twin rooms with en suite shower rooms, some of which are linked with connecting doors for families. It is modern and comfortable Replica Zodiac Watches with a bar, small sitting room and restaurant area on the ground floor, plus a handy ski and boot store and kids club. The staff were young, helpful and polite, but lacked a g little imagination in the Christmas decorations department as a tree and some brightly wrapped presents in the fireplace were all that was on display. Sadly the fireplace remained unlit all week too, but in a small snow covered alpine village with festive lights across the streets and a medieval church lit up as a centrepiece, there was atmosphere aplenty. From Turin airport Claviere is only a 90-minute coach ride up the Susa Valley and into the Milky Way (Vialattea). As our flight left the UK at 7am we were in the hotel by lunchtime and being fitted for skis at the excellent and amusingly named Noleggio hire shop at around 2pm.The sun was blazing down from a clear blue sky and quite dazzling off the snow, but we didn't have ski passes yet. So stashing our equipment back at the hotel we spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the town and pelting each other with snowballs. Chanel Men Wallets Food was hearty mountain fare at Hotel Grande. Nothing fancy, but with a large breakfast, tea and cake at 4pm and a choice of evening meal there was plenty to satisfy hungry skiers. The skiing in Claviere is excellent with a handy combi-nation of easy blues and fai easy reds close to the town fair weather skiers, and easy links to Montgenevre on the French side or Cesana, Sansicario and Sestriere in Italy.
